Tokyo is one of my all-time favorite cities… it has so much going on, and offers so many activities and attractions that I keep finding new things to do with every visit. One of my favorites, though? Joining a cooking class!
I love taking part in cooking lessons all over the world, because they’re a super fun activity, but they also give you the chance to discover the secrets of local culture through its cuisine, and learn the ancient recipes, passed down through generations, that don’t make it to the internet 😉
And if you’re a foodie like me, and often crave delicious Japanese food, you’ll be glad you can whip up a feast in your own kitchen, with the skills and techniques you learned in your cooking class.
I think it’s an unmissable activity in the city for people who enjoy cooking, and for that reason, I compiled this post of incredible Tokyo cooking classes. You’ll find everything from sushi workshops to ramen-making and gyoza lessons, so you can pick your favorite dish and dive right in.
We went to two different cooking classes in Japan recently, and had a fantastic time, so I can’t recommend them enough. Keep reading!

▶️ Pssst! I’ve also written a post about the best sushi-making classes in Tokyo if that’s what you’re looking for!

OUR PICK: The BEST Tokyo Cooking Class
Master the art of Japanese cuisine with this Tokyo: Wagyu and 7 Japanese Dishes Cooking Class, which I personally went on and loved! It was a very hands-on lesson, in which we were taught a great variety of non-cliché Japanese dishes, including some of my favorites.
Instead of making the popular ramen or sushi, we prepared some of the most traditional meals, including miso soup, sukiyaki hot pot, Wagyu beef, tofu stuffed with ground chicken, ginger, and edamame, dorayaki, and other delicious sweet desserts.
We made seven dishes in total, so it was a very comprehensive class even though it lasted just three hours.
We had an English-speaking, very knowledgeable instructor who taught us authentic Japanese cooking techniques, explained all the uses of traditional ingredients like dashi and miso, and introduced us to the cultural side of every dish, making the class all the more insightful and enjoyable.
Our group was also quite small, with only seven participants, so it felt very personal. At the end of the class, we got to sit down and enjoy all of our creations paired with Japanese green tea and sake. Itadakimasu!
Why this tour? You’ll be whipping up an entire feast in merely three hours. The best part, in my opinion, is that you’ll learn to make traditional dishes beyond the classic ramen and gyoza, diving deeper into the culinary world and traditions of the Japanese people.
Read what the reviews say:
“This was an absolutely excellent cooking class. Don’t hesitate to sign up. Everything was done in a clean, brightly lit space with five pleasant English speaking women who not only efficiently prepped everything but also gave an amazing history of the ingredients and offered suggestions on how to obtain ingredients and substitution abroad. I’ve always wanted to know the difference between red miso and white miso and now I know! I have already recommended to many friends and will surely take their sushi class in the future.”

This cooking class takes place in Yuca’s home in a non-touristy neighborhood in Tokyo, so this is your chance to see the inside of a traditional Japanese home.

Learn to perfect home-style ramen with rich broth under the guidance of your local chef, and craft handmade gyoza filled with savory pork and veggies. Everyone has a hand making the two dishes, so it’s a very hands-on class.
Finally, sit down to enjoy your delicious creations with your fellow cooks. After the class is over, walk with Yuca to a local supermarket where she’ll explain to you what different ingredients are (trust me, supermarkets in Japan are hard to navigate on your own!).
➤ Why this tour? It’s a highly-rated experience with over 500 5-star reviews, that takes place in a local’s house, introducing you to Japan’s traditional lifestyle from the inside. Differently from other cooking classes in Tokyo, this class is hands-on, ensuring you apply your newly acquired knowledge and learn authentic techniques with the guidance of a professional.
