13 BEST Food Tours in Lisbon

Lisbon is one of my favorite European cities, and it may or may not have a little to do with its gastronomic delights (hint: it does!) The vibrant capital city of Portugal has many extraordinary attractions that make visiting worth your while, but its cuisine will make you want to stay longer!

From the world-renowned Pastéis de Nata and a great number of traditional pastries to meat specialties, seafood, Port wine and really good coffee, I think Portuguese cuisine is seriously underrated.

Every time I visit Portugal, I’m reminded of how tasty and simple the food is, always made with good ingredients. And I can never have enough!

Indulging in local dishes is one of the best things to do in Lisbon, so I wrote this comprehensive article, compiling the best food tours in Lisbon. Each of them offers a different glimpse into the city’s culture, traditions, and food, and they’re all spectacular, so feel free to choose your favorite!

Why rely on my recommendations? Well, I first visited Lisbon in 2014 and was among the first bloggers to shine a spotlight on this captivating city. Since then, I’ve returned multiple times, exploring the vibrant culinary scene and seeking out the very best tours and activities.

From traditional pastries to contemporary fusion, I’ve curated a list of tours that showcase the rich flavors of Lisbon, all while keeping an eye on value.

I usually use Viator, Get Your Guide, and Devour to book activities around the world. I especially recommend them for their fantastic cancellation policy. If your travel plans change, you can cancel most tours up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.

OUR PICK: The BEST Food Tour in Lisbon

Our top pick is this iconic Lisbon: Food and Wine Small Group Walking Tour, in which you’ll get to discover Lisbon’s culinary gems with a local foodie guide.

Begin with a refreshing glass of crisp Vinho Verde wine paired with codfish cake, a beloved classic. You’ll then walk to a traditional café for a glass of Port, Portugal’s famed fortified wine, which will be served with São Jorge cheese. You’ll learn about what makes this wine so special from an expert, then continue your journey to a historic tasca.

There, you’ll be treated to a tasty bifana pork sandwich, one of the most delicious local specialties (my mouth waters just thinking about it!) and draft beer to wash it down. Your next stop is at a 19th-century bar, supposedly the first one to sell Grinjinha, a cherry brandy that’s become the city’s signature drink.

Along the way, between bites, your guide will introduce you to the history, culture, and customs of Lisbon and its citizens, explaining each of the dishes’ origins and providing insider facts and tips that you wouldn’t hear anywhere else.

After your taste of Grinjinha, venture into the Baixa neighborhood to sample smoky chouriço with warm Portuguese bread and red wine, then enjoy a rice dish paired with yet another glass of wine.

Overall you’ll taste 15 bites and dishes, uncovering the various flavors of Portugal’s capital city, and stopping everywhere from bustling markets to hidden cafés, and local eateries, so you get a comprehensive introduction into Lisbon’s foodie scene.

Why is this the best tour? Besides the fact that it includes no less than 15 tastings? The food selection is top-notch, ensuring you get to relish the popular dishes as well as the local favorites. You’ll visit Lisbon’s most iconic neighborhoods along the way, and benefit from the expertise of a local guide.
